Grand Slam Track Rules + Regulations

COMPETITOR SELECTION PROCESS + ELIGIBILITY

Grand Slam Track is dedicated to creating the best head-to-head matchups and rivalries for fans globally. Our Racers are selected from the best on the planet across each of our event groups. Challengers are rivals motivated by intense competition, or emerging athletes looking to breakthrough. Our selection criteria celebrates every type of competitor in the field.

Each season, 48 competitors will be named to the Grand Slam Track League as Racers. These competitors are selected by the Grand Slam Track Racing Committee based on a combination of factors to include the fastest and best in each event group, with a focus on fierce rivalries and thrilling competitive racing. Racers commit to racing in all four Slams per year, will receive an annual base compensation, and are eligible for full prize money.

In addition to the annual roster, 48 additional competitors are selected on a Slam-by-Slam basis to challenge Racers. Challengers are chosen by the Grand Slam Track Racing Committee based on a combination of factors including recent performances and the most intriguing competitors and matchups.

Athletes younger than 16 years of age on 31 December in the year of competition may not compete in a Grand Slam Track event. Should state gambling laws prohibit sports betting on Grand Slam Track competitors of a certain age (e.g. under 18), the competitors participation in a Grand Slam Track event will not be impacted, however sports betting will not be permitted on those competitors.

RACE FORMAT

Grand Slam Track events will be conducted annually in cities around the world with an emphasis on racing early in the athletics season so competitors can still focus on the major championships later in the calendar. The 2025 Grand Slam Track season locations are Kingston (April 4–6), Miami (May 2–4), Philadelphia (May 30–June 1), and Los Angeles (June 27–29).

There will be a total of eight competitors in each race comprising four Racers and four Challengers. All competitors in each event group will compete in two events per Slam over the course of three days. There are no qualifying or preliminary rounds, so each race should be considered a final. The race sequencing may change at each Slam with exception of the short hurdle group and the long hurdle group where the competitors will always hurdle first.

The winner of the Slam for each event group will be the competitor with the highest point total across both events contested.

SCORING GUIDELINES

Competitors will receive points for their finishing position in each of their two races using the scoring table below. The competitor who finishes with the highest total number of points after the completion of both events will be crowned Slam Champion.

In the case of a tie, the competitor with the highest individual finish will be awarded the higher place. If there is still a tie, the lowest combined time of both races for each competitor will be used to determine place. In the event there is still a tie, the tied competitors will split the corresponding combined prize money equally (e.g. two competitors tied for 2nd place will split the 2nd place and 3rd place prize money).

Should a competitor be disqualified in one of their events, no points will be awarded. If the disqualification occurs during their first event, the competitor will still be eligible to compete in their second event.

Scoring Table

Dominance Score

At the end of each season, one competitor across all men’s event groups and one competitor across all women’s event groups will be crowned as the season’s overall winners based on cumulative results at the conclusion of the final Slam. The competitor with the most overall season points wins. In the instance of a tie between competitors in different event groups, the dominance score will serve as the tie-breaker. The dominance score is a measure of how much a competitor beats the field by.

  • GST will measure the result of each competitor against the median time in each individual race. Finishing further ahead of the median by a larger margin equates to more points earned.
  • Anyone who finishes better than the median time will receive points towards their dominance score tally. If below the median, 0 points will be added.
  • The points received are dictated by the World Athletics Scoring Table of Athletics; this point value is the difference between the points associated with an individual's result and the median result.
  • If a competitor misses a race, it will count as 0 points towards their dominance score.
  • At the end of the season, the competitor with the most overall points wins. The highest average dominance score will be used to break the instance of a points tie amongst competitors in different event groups.

TECHNICAL RULES

Grand Slam Track will conduct the competition in accordance with World Athletics Technical Rules, and in partnership with the respective national federations. The GST Competition Director will coordinate the management of the events, and certified technical officials will ensure compliance with the rules.

Lane Assignments

  • The Grand Slam Track Competition Director will oversee the assignment of lanes according to the following procedure:
  • First, seed the Racers randomly for the first set of preferred lanes.
  • Second, seed the Challengers randomly for the remaining lanes.
  • Both event group races will be seeded separately, therefore the results of Race #1 will not impact the seeding of Race #2.
  • There are no qualifying rounds, so every race should be considered a final.
  • Results from one Slam will not impact the lane assignments for the other Slams.

In the event that a competitor withdraws prior to the start the Slam after the start list has been posted, Grand Slam Track will make every effort to replace that competitor, and the replacement will be slotted into the available lane.

Preferred Lanes

Races will be seeded according to the protocol above using the following preferred lanes at each venue:

KINGSTON - National Stadium

  • 100m/100mH/110mH: 5-4-6-3-7-2-8-1

Protests

Protests concerning the result or conduct of an event shall be made in writing to the Referee at once and not later than 15 minutes after the publication of the results of that event. Only a competitor or a competitor's designated credentialed representative may file a protest, and only in the event to which that competitor competes in.

An immediate oral protest regarding a decision by the Starter to charge a false start, made by the competitor being charged, shall be accepted by the Start Referee. In order to protect the rights of all concerned and provide the time required to consider all evidence with regard to the charged false start, the competitor shall be allowed the opportunity to compete under protest, unless the evidence of a false start immediately available to the Start Referee is extremely obvious, in which case the protest shall be denied. After that decision, no further opportunity to protest that specifically charged false start shall be available to the competitor. For a competitor allowed to compete under protest, a red and white (diagonally halved) card shall be raised in front of the competitor. The false start decision of the Starter shall remain in place pending a determination by the Start Referee, therefore the competitors results and points will not appear in the overall standings unless it is determined by the Start Referee that their marks should be reinstated.

The decision of the Referees in all matters shall be final and without further right to appeal.

Shoe Control

All competitors must adhere to the World Athletics Shoe Control guidelines and wear only racing shoes that have been approved by World Athletics. Racing shoes will be randomly checked after competition and those found not in compliance may be disqualified.

INJURY PROTOCOLS

In the event a competitor is unable to compete due to injury or illness, they must contact the Grand Slam Track Medical Director immediately so an assessment of the injury or illness can be made. Grand Slam Track will make every attempt to replace an injured or sick competitor prior to the start of the Slam, however a competitor will not be replaced after the Slam has already begun (e.g. competitor competes in Race #1 but is unable to compete in Race #2 due to injury/illness).

FAILURE TO PARTICIPATE

If a competitor does not participate in their first event for any reason, they will not be eligible to compete in their second event. If a competitor competes in their first event and then withdraws from their second event for any reason other than injury, illness, or force majeure, that competitor forfeits any points and prize money earned for that Slam. If following the conclusion of their first event a competitor does not compete in their second event due to injury or illness, the competitor will hold onto their point total from race one and will still be eligible for prize money.

DRUG TESTING PROTOCOLS

Competitors may be subject to doping control before, during and/or after Grand Slam Track events as directed by the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA), the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), and in compliance with World Athletics and the associated Member Federations. The Grand Slam Track Doping Control Site Coordinator will work directly with assigned on-site Doping Control Officers to ensure compliance with all procedures.

EVENT DELAYS, POSTPONEMENT + CANCELLATION PROTOCOLS

Any change to the competition schedule requires careful management and communication to ensure that the athlete performance, operations, financial and reputational impact is minimized. Decisions to delay, postpone and/or cancel competition during a GST event will be made by GST Meet Management.

Safety + Security Risk Assessments

GST Meet Management will work with the respective venue managers and local law enforcement representatives to complete a risk assessment ahead of each event to determine the level of service required. GST will also follow any existing safety and security protocols already in place at the venues and as part of broader city and state guidelines.

Severe Weather

GST Meet Management alongside the venue managers, will work directly with the local meteorologist to track any potential severe weather in the area that could jeopardize the safety of the competitors and spectators attending the event. Should severe weather occur, public address announcements and digital communications will advise on evacuation procedures. Examples of severe weather events that could cause delays include lightning, high winds, heavy rain, snow/ice, or extreme heat.

GST Meet Management will determine the appropriate steps should severe weather require delays, postponement, and/or cancellation of the events, however every effort will be made to complete each day’s scheduled events.

Definitions:

  • Delay: An event or session is considered to be delayed if it does not start at the scheduled time or is interrupted after the scheduled start but is expected to be completed within the scheduled session time or within the agreed delay period. Examples of possible reasons for a delay are severe weather, technical issues, medical emergencies, or security incidents.
  • Postponement: An event or session is considered postponed if it has been delayed, or was interrupted after the start and it is known that the competition will not continue within the scheduled session, and it is expected to be rescheduled to a later date.
  • Rescheduled: A competition is considered rescheduled when the new date and time are confirmed.
  • Cancellation: An event or session is considered cancelled when it cannot and/or will not be rescheduled for another date or time.

SPORTS BETTING RULES

Competitors participating in a Grand Slam Track event along with their coaches, agents or personal medical providers are restricted from betting on any element of a Grand Slam Track competition, or fixing the outcome of any Grand Slam Track competition, therefore any involvement in bribery or fixing events is strictly prohibited. If a competitor, coach, agent or personal medical provider is found to have been involved in sports betting, is found to have knowledge of any attempts by others to throw or fix a Grand Slam Track event, or knowingly associates with gamblers or gambling activity, Grand Slam Track reserves the right to terminate the competitors contract immediately, and competitors may forfeit or return any earned prize money and/or compensation. Legal action may also be taken in certain circumstances. All Grand Slam Track competitors and staff members have signed agreements prohibiting any involvement related to sports betting.
